As with any significant software product, MySQL is a broad subject for study and there is a lot we must know to be able to use it effectively. David Swain's MySQL 5 Development Part 1 course for VTC is the first in a training series intended to provide a solid foundation on which to build MySQL mastery. In this introductory course, we learn a number of non-destructive, read-only techniques for retrieving data from a MySQL database, as well as some useful history and practical background information about MySQL. We focus on statement and expression syntax and "why" those elements are written in a specific way. Further study exercises are provided for many of the hands-on lessons. Personal Opinion: I been reading it and i am in chapter 2 so far its a really nice and well laid out book they explain it very well. I give it 9/10. I took away 1 point because well, i read 2 books by Thomas Powell "HMLT, XHMLT & CSS" and "javascript" and i prefer the way he writes and teaches, he always has the code right there in the book. Like the authors of this PHP & MySQL book stated in the beginning of first chapter is they get straight to business and don't waste any time, basically they don't waste time showing & explaining to you as if you were a baby. Which i need sometimes. This book is REALLY worth it! I just don't like the fact that i just got to a part in chapter 2 where they basically say "ok we just changed this but refer to the source in the CD-Rom to see what we changed." I rather them to waste and add 100 pages so i don't have to resort to the CD-Rom every now and then to view their final source for each project.
