For the first time, three prisons across Russia unlock their doors to an international film crew. From a Siberian prison camp where temperatures plummet to 50 below to the highest security prison, where cannibals, terrorists and serial killers will live out the rest of their days, caged like animals. And, a pass inside infamous Vladimir Central — at over 200 years old, it’s held an estimated one million inmates. Inside Black Dolphin, a cannibal talks openly about his crime, divulging how he boiled, fried and ate his murder victim. In Vladimir Central, a convict opens up about killing his brother-in-law for disturbing his daughter’s peaceful night’s sleep. And inside a Siberian prison camp, we meet two friends about to go their separate ways when one gets paroled.

The Petroff Defence (sometimes called the Russian Defence, and named after Russias Alexander Petrov, 1794-1867) is considered as one of Blacks most reliable and solid methods of meeting the kings pawn opening. It is easy to play and an excellent choice for someone looking for an alternative to the Scotch Opening, the Italian Game and the Spanish torture of the Ruy Lopez.
Until a few years ago, the Petroff was an opening that was favored by only a few top Grandmasters, including Anatoly Karpov and Artur Yusupov. However, the last few years have seen a dramatic rise in its popularity, and it now provides battlefields for many top clashes of the modern elite players, including Anand, Kramnik, Leko, Topalov, and Shirov. And in the latest of his New Ideas in… series, GM Ronen Har-Zvi, takes a closer look under the microscope at the solid Petroff.

When the family grave of the Tsar Nicholas II, who was shot by the Bolsheviks, was unearthed two bodies were found to be missing. What had happened to the corpses?
On the night of 16/17 July 1918, Nicholas II, last Tsar of All the Russias, his entire immediate family, as well as four of their servants, were executed by the Cheka (Bolshevik secret police) in the cellar of a house in Ekaterinburg (renamed Sverdlovsk from 1924-1991). Initially, the remains were buried in a mineshaft, but were moved the next day when rumours began to spread concerning the burial site.
There they remained, undisturbed and undetected, for over seventy years, until the location was discovered and unearthed in 1979, by Alexander Avdonin, a geologist born in Sverdlovsk, and writer/filmmaker Geli Ryabov. Due to the repressive Soviet climate, neither man spoke about their discovery until 1989, when Ryabov released the story to the media.
